I have to give Facebook credit. After 3 months of the hacker take down Facebook finally responded to my complaint that I couldn’t post to my Facebook Page because a hacker had gotten me suspended. Facebook has put in place a way to remove linked accounts that are not yours. This deals specifically with this particular hack.
Before you think that Facebook is altruistic and really cares about users, know that they have been threatened with class action lawsuits by business Facebook users who have been hurt by this particular hack. When it comes to Facebook we are their product that they are trafficking to advertisers and investors for information about us the users. In some cases the users are businesses that end up in a twisted and complicated relationship with Facebook. It is in Facebook’s best financial interest to keep everyone happy. Facebook is so huge now that all I can say is “Good luck,” to Facebook and anyone who wants to use their platform.
My take away from this experience (now that I have my account back) would be that I need to continue to take cyber security seriously. I’m glad that I started out in 2008 on the alert with back doors into most of my Facebook Pages. Instances like this demand that you have several access points into your Pages whether you have multiple people managing your page or you have an additional security accounts to test the ins and outs of Facebook privacy and security. Yeah, I know, I’m not swearing off Facebook. I do like the connections and network of over a decade of use. I’m not quite as enthusiastic about feeding the machine. I chalk it up to growing pains in the information age.
Good luck Zuck, Facebook founder and my oldest and bestest Facebook friend, Mikey. Hey, when did you unfriend me? I thought we were buddies.
Cheers to brindrayashna9458692 for the wild ride! I’m not sure why you did this. But if you ever choose to come to the light side, you could probably make a good living helping people with their cyber security woes instead of making people miserable. Just don’t expect any money from me. I would rather cut my losses. I will never fully trust a platform like Facebook with my livelihood. Social media is risky business. I can’t help but notice all the cyber security experts who immediately rushed to ‘help’ me recover my account for a mere $50 to cover fees. Sorry, I’m too cheap for that. I don’t recommend anyone fall for that, paying for services not yet rendered. What is that old policy? “We will not negotiate with terrorists.” [ cue laser pointer dot on undisclosed individual hiding in a bunker ]
Seriously, I have no beef with anyone. The peculiar economy Facebook has built is quite the set up. Very interesting. Quite the opportunity for all sorts of enterprising people. And I’m still there. I just wish that everyone played nice. But that’s probably not a realistic expectation. All the brute force hacker attacks against my nobody websites in order to post Ray Ban Glasses ads, I don’t think for a minute that this is my last experience with this sort of thing.
Oh well, another day, another challenge.
